Finding personal balance

For many people, a ‘balanced’ life is an elusive ideal. By the time we work, sleep, care for loved ones, manage household chores – there’s precious little time left for relaxation and self-fulfillment. Most of us spend our days juggling the conflicting demands of home and work.

Personal balance is a concept as individual as you are – only you can decide what balance means in your life. Maintaining a healthy relationship between your personal and work life is an ongoing challenge. As your life evolves and your needs change, your daily balancing act will change too.

Have you got it?
When your life is balanced, you’re in control of your priorities. You’re physically healthy, mentally stable and emotionally secure. You can handle the multiple responsibilities of home and work, without feeling conflicted, pressured or guilty. You make good decisions based on informed choices. Most importantly, you don’t feel hopeless, helpless or relentlessly stressed.

Can you get it?
To experience true health and happiness, you have to balance the needs of your body, mind and spirit. If you’re living in a state of imbalance, you’ll eventually pay a price, both physically and emotionally. When your day is filled with more negatives than positives, it’s time to make some changes.

There are many tools and tips on this website that can help you achieve personal balance.

Think about what you need and want out of life – then set priorities and create a realistic action plan to reach your goals.
Improve your time management skills so that you don’t waste precious time on unimportant tasks. Spend your energy on activities that add meaning and value to your life.
Take charge of your personal affairs – Do some life planning, establish a budget and make sure you have the proper legal, financial and insurance supports in place. You’ll worry less and enjoy life more when you know you have these important details under control.
Don’t worry about problems – solve them! There are opportunities hidden in even the most challenging situations. By dealing with problems and issues right away, you’ll reduce stress and bring more harmony to your life. If you need help managing a difficult issue, contact the Employment Assistance Program for information and support. Services are free and available year-round for Peel board staff and immediate family members.
Talk to your family and friends – A strong support network will help keep you focused and committed to your balanced lifestyle. Friends and family also help to maintain your emotional health by providing advice, assistance and comfort during difficult times.
Get rid of stress the natural way – Exercise, yoga and meditation are all wonderful stress relievers that you can easily incorporate into your daily routine.
Live in the present moment more often – Instead of living your life on fast-forward, take a few minutes at the start of each day to bring your attention to the present. Ask yourself what you need to feel happy today. Those are the things that belong at the top of your priority list.
Satisfy your intellectual needs – Make time to take courses, read books, enjoy a hobby or learn a new skill. Keeping your mind stimulated and engaged helps to reduce stress, anxiety, boredom and depression. The Peel board encourages and supports the healthy benefits of lifelong learning.
Nourish your spirit – Finding opportunities for quiet reflection is an important factor in achieving personal balance. Everyone needs time to look inward and think about the things they value in life. You may find that your religious beliefs fulfill your spiritual needs. Tranquil activities, such as meditation, yoga and T’ai chi, can also help to relax your mind and nurture your spirit.
Give yourself a chance to relax – Take a walk, have a bath or go to bed early. Easing the daily pressures of your life will keep you feeling healthy and optimistic about life.
