Making healthy changes at work is so much easier when you
have the support of friends and colleagues. Take a team approach to fitness
– and have some fun along the way!
Try introducing healthy activities into your school and classroom too.
Today, more than half of Canadian children are not active enough for healthy
growth and development and are at risk for serious long-term health
problems. You can help change this health picture by helping to promote an
active lifestyle for students, staff and parents.

Daily Physical Activities – Help your students learn to
be more active by incorporating a Daily Physical Activity (DPA) program into
your classroom schedule. Just 20 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity a
day can help students maintain their physical fitness, improve their health
and wellness, and enhance their behaviour, self-esteem, readiness to learn
and achievement. Learn more about the board’s

Plan a Terry Fox
run
– Students of all ages can relate to the story of Terry Fox and his
courageous Marathon of Hope. The event promotes physical activity and raises
money for cancer research. A number of Peel schools held Terry Fox runs last
year and raised over $180,000. For more information and resources, contact:

Introduce Hoops for Heart to your
school - This is an exciting fundraising event that
supports the Heart and Stroke Foundation. It’s a fun-filled basketball skill
development program aimed at students in grades 6-9. The Heart and Stroke
Foundation provides everything you need to run a fantastic event, including
lesson plans, class activities and family-oriented programs. For more
information or to register your school contact:

Start a Walking School Bus in your
neighbourhood – A walking school bus promotes active
living at home and school. It involves parents or caregivers volunteering,
on a rotating basis, to walk children back and forth to school. In addition
to encouraging physical activity, it also improves air quality and increases
safety by reducing traffic congestion around the school.
