Antioxidants
Antioxidants are tiny molecular warriors that hunt and destroy
free radicals. Free radicals roam through your body, damaging genetic material
in your cells. They hasten the aging process and are thought to promote
diseases, such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. Free radicals are triggered
by factors such as excessive exposure to the sun, contact with environmental
pollutants or an unhealthy diet.
Meat
Research shows that even people with high blood cholesterol can enjoy lean beef
as part of a healthy, lower-fat diet. Lean and extra lean ground beef must meet
the same government labeling standards as ground chicken turkey or pork. They
all must have no more than 17% fat for lean and 10% fat for extra-lean.
Eggs
Eggs are a great source of protein and can add healthy variety to your diet. But
eggs have attracted a lot of bad press because of high cholesterol levels in the
yolks. If you love eggs, don’t despair! Eating eggs several times a week won’t
affect your risk of heart disease, as long you’re in good health. If you’re
worried about your cholesterol levels, try mixing one whole egg with several egg
whites or switch to egg substitutes – you’ll keep the delicious egg taste but
lose the high cholesterol!
Water
Did you know that your brain is almost 85% water? When your body becomes
dehydrated, your metabolism slows down and electrolyte imbalances can occur,
causing a decrease in your energy levels and reducing your ability to perform
tasks effectively. So make sure your body stays hydrated by drinking water
regularly throughout the day.
