Instead of feeling guilty about your weight, use these two
calculators to find out whether or not you really have something to worry about.
You may be pleasantly surprised to find that you fall within a healthy weight
range.
Body Mass Index (BMI)
is used by health professionals to evaluate your weight in relation to your
height. It is considered to provide a reliable indicator of total body fat.
Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) is used to measure where fat is
accumulated on your body. If your extra pounds tend to end up around your waist
and abdomen, then you’re at a higher risk of serious health problems.
For women, a waist-to-hip ratio greater than 0.8 or a waist circumference of 88
cm (35 inches) or more indicates that you are at increased risk of serious
health problems, such as heart disease and diabetes. For men, risk increases
with a WHR of 1.0 or a waist circumference of 102 cm (40 inches) or more.
What is a waist-to-hip ratio?
WHR is the circumference of your waist divided by the circumference of your
hips.
How do I measure my waist and hips?
Use a tape measure to measure your natural waist where it is the smallest,
usually at or just above your belly button. Measure your hips at the widest part
of your buttocks.
Use this simple tool to calculate your
waist-to-hip ratio.
